IPL

What is IPL?

IPL (Fotofacial) is an FDA-approved non-invasive treatment. Unlike a laser, which has one wavelength of light, IPL uses multiple wavelengths ranging from 400-1200 nm. Our state-of-the-art Lumenis allows specific targeting of the problem which needs to be addressed. For example, with age spots, freckles, or brown discoloration, the light hits melanin. For broken capillaries, rosacea, or redness, the hemoglobin in red blood cells is targeted. In each case, the light selectively seeks out the problem area, while sparing healthy tissue. The body then gradually reabsorbs the damaged fragments, resulting in clearer skin.

What is IPL used for?

IPL can decrease brown pigment, fade red blood vessels, improve acne, and shrink large pores. It is also excellent for improving the look of sun-damaged skin by stimulating collagen production and minimizing fine wrinkles. The overall result is clearer, tighter skin.

Who can have IPL?

IPL cannot be done on darker skin, nor during pregnancy or nursing. Tanned skin cannot be treated, nor can anyone who has taken Accutane (for acne) in the past 6 months. Your full medical history will be reviewed at the time of consult. Also men should be aware that IPL can cause patchy beard growth due to hair loss.

How are the treatments done?

The face, neck, chest, and hands are the areas typically treated. A cold gel is applied, then you will feel a brief snap as the pulse comes through. Most people compare it to the snap of a rubberband. The procedure takes about 30 minutes, and all treatments are done by our experienced doctor.

What about afterwards?

Brown spots may darken and peel off, and tiny capillaries become more visible. However any redness or swelling will quickly decrease, and there is no downtime. Treatments are spaced 3 weeks apart, and results will continue to improve over the following weeks. Typically 3-6 treatments are done initially, with a single followup procedure yearly after that.

What are the results?

Skin tone becomes more even, with a fading of brown spots or red vessels. Acne decreases, pore size shrinks, and skin becomes smoother and more radiant. IPL remains one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures because of the great results it produces.
